Skill Station: 1 & 2 Rescuer Adult CPR & AED

Objectives:

Demonstrate how to reposition an unconscious adult for airway management. (pp 417–418, Skill Drill 11-1)

Demonstrate how to check for a pulse at the carotid artery in an unresponsive patient. (p 417)

Demonstrate how to perform external chest compressions in an adult /child (pp 419–420, Skill Drill 11-2)

Demonstrate how to perform a head tilt–chin lift maneuver on an adult /child patient. (pp 419–421)

Demonstrate how to perform one-rescuer adult CPR. (pp 424–426, Skill Drill 11-3)

Demonstrate how to perform rescue breathing on an adult/child(pp 432–433)

Demonstrate how to perform two-rescuer adult /child CPR. (pp 424–428, Skill Drill 11-4)

Demonstrate how to use AEDs and perform CPR. With variations for a child. (pp 551–553, Skill Drill 14-2)

Demonstrate how to remove a foreign body airway obstruction in a conscious pregnant or obese patient using chest thrusts. (pp 439–

440)

Demonstrate how to remove a foreign body airway obstruction in a conscious child older than 1 year using abdominal thrusts (Heimlich

maneuver). (pp 440–441)

Instructions: Run the students in small groups through the scenarios below. Each team of 2 students should have their own manikin. All scenarios start with “You are called to a local home for an unconscious adult” Precautions: DO NOT LECTURE – force your students to repeatedly drill the skill until it becomes second nature. The goal is to create muscle- memory, so repeat the drill multiple times.
