5.07 Scenario Lab: Resuscitation and Shock Station: Neurogenic Shock Instructor Guidance
Objectives: Demonstrate how to control shock. (pp 393–389, Skill Drill 10-1)
Setup: You will need your cohort bag. You will also need a board with accessories.
Deployment: DO NOT LECTURE – your students should be working hands-on within 5 minutes of arriving Deploy your students in one team – one student or the instructor should be patient, the rest rescuers. You can make one student be a frantic parent if you like. Have them transition through the scenario on the back of this sheet like any other scenario from a scenario lab day.
Debriefing: Give students feedback on the scenario at the end. Some points to discuss:
- Did they quickly apply oxygen?
- Did they identify the extent of the neuro problem (PMS)?
- Why is this patient hypotensive (neurogentic shock)?
- Why is this not a head injury (good mental status, no hypertension)?
- How is this shock different than others (no catecholamine/adrenalin release due to spinal injury)? - How do you identify neurogenic shock (normal/slow heart rate, warm/dry skin, hx of spinal injury)?
