You will need pediatric BVM and airway adjuncts. You will also need a transport device such as a Reeves Deployment: DO NOT LECTURE – your students should be working hands-on within 5 minutes of arriving Deploy your students in one team – one student or the instructor should be patient, the rest rescuers. Have them transition through the scenario on the back of this sheet like any other scenario from a scenario lab day.
Debriefing: Give students feedback on the scenario at the end. Some points to discuss:
- Did they quickly solicit a history from the parents?
- Did they apply quickly bag the patient?
- Did they spend time on trying to determine if it was an allergic reaction? If so, how did they rule it out? - Did the patient arrest? If so, do they know why? Explain to them what would have happened if they bagged the patient promptly. Make sure they understand they could have prevented the arrest. - Did they apply the AED (its’ OK if they did but only when the patient was pulseless). Why didn’t it shock (it’s not VF/VT)? - Enrichment – have them utilize the ATV for long-term management of this patient’s breathing if it is available.
