5.07 Scenario Lab: Resuscitation and Shock Station: Septic Shock Instructor Guidance
Objectives: Demonstrate how to control shock. (pp 393–389, Skill Drill 10-1)
Setup: You will need your cohort bag. You will also need a transport device such as a stretcher
Deployment: DO NOT LECTURE – your students should be working hands-on within 5 minutes of arriving Deploy your students in one team – one student or the instructor should be patient, the rest rescuers. Have them transition through the scenario on the back of this sheet like any other scenario from a scenario lab day.
Debriefing: Give students feedback on the scenario at the end. Some points to discuss:
- Did they quickly solicit a history from the staff of the nursing home?
Did they apply a non-rebreather?
-
- Did they identify the cause of the shock? Did they equate it with the trip to the UTI?
- Discuss compensated vs. decompensed shock. Ask the students what shock this patient is in. Since the BP <90 systolic and the patient is altered, the answer is decompensated
- Ask them if ALS is necessary? Why (IV fluid bolus)?
- Ask them what the hospital might do (Tylenol for fever, antibiotics )
- Make sure they understand Sepsis, although not exciting, it a real life-threatening emergency
