EMT Lesson Plans
5.07 Scenario Lab: Resuscitation and Shock Station: Hypovolemic Shock II Instructor Guidance
Objectives:
1. Demonstrate how to control shock. (pp 393–389, Skill Drill 10-1)
2. Demonstrate how to complete an EMS patient care report for a patient with bleeding and/or shock. (pp
393, 403)
Setup: You will need your cohort bag. You will also need a transport device and a full body manikin
Deployment: DO NOT LECTURE – your students should be working hands-on within 5 minutes of arriving Deploy your students in one team – one student or the instructor should be patient, the rest rescuers. Have them transition through the scenario on the back of this sheet like any other scenario from a scenario lab day.
Debriefing: Give students feedback on the scenario at the end. Some points to discuss:
- Did they quickly solicit a history from the patient?
- Did they apply a non-rebreather?
- Discuss compensated vs. decompensed shock. Ask the students what shock this patient is in. Since the BP is below 84 systolic (this patient is 7 years old) and the patient is altered, the answer is decompensated.
- Ask them if ALS is necessary? Why (IV fluid bolus)?
