8.10 EMS Operations Station: Triage Scenario

Objectives: Demonstrate how to perform triage based on a fictitious scenario that involves a mass-casualty incident. (pp 1394–1399)

Preparation: If students brought patients, prep them and deploy them in the room. Assign one Incident Commander, and break up teams into crews of 2-3. Give each team a Cohort Bag, transport devices, boards, etc. Have them triage and transport all patients involved. Read to Students: This is a workplace in the downtown area where a boiler has exploded. The scene is safe but multiple patients are inside the facility. The incident commander is the first arriving unit, please begin operations and I will give you additional units as they arrive.

IMPORTANT This exercise is going to be chaotic and the instructors MUST insure student safety above all else. Correcting technique is less important than making sure nobody gets hurt. Let students make errors in decision making – you can debrief them later.
