Equipment for this station • Quality BLS manikin •
Cohort Bag with Airway Adjuncts
Suction Unit
• •
Pocket Mask with Oxygen Inlet
Precautions: Have the student perform the isolated skill of suctioning a patient and ventilating them with a pocket mask. This station calls for no assessment at all. Do not engage the student in conversation or questioning – this is supposed to evaluate skills performance not cognitive knowledge.
Objectives: 1. Demonstrate the steps in performing the head tilt–chin lift maneuver. (p 337) 2. Demonstrate mouth-to-mask ventilation. (pp 356–357, Skill Drill 9-8) 3. Demonstrate how to operate a suction unit. (p 344)
Setup: Please the manikin on a surface and lay out the devices. Disassemble the pocket mask and suction between students testing. Suctioning the oropharynx with a French catheter is not an acceptable technique – a yankauer should be used.
Instructions to be read to students: “This patient has secretions in his mouth. Please demonstrate proper suctioning skill as per the skills sheet.”
“This patient has a pulse but is apneic. Please demonstrate pocket mask ventilations as per the skills sheet.”
