Improvement typically within 15 minutes
Indications Hypoglycemia in the alert patient able to swallow
Adult Dose 1 tube (15g of glucose) buccal (between gum and cheek)
Pediatric Dose 1 tube (15g of glucose) buccal
Contraindications Hypersensitivity, delirium tremens with dehydration, intracranial hemorrhage, inability to swallow.
Adverse Reactions Airway compromise if solution enters the glottic opening
Precautions Make sure the patient is capable of swallowing the solution to protect their own airway
Considerations Consider alternate oral nutrition, such as sugary drinks, or cake frosting. Keep patient food allergies in mind.
